KELLAR THE GREAT MAGICIAN, PORTRAIT
KELLAR THE GREAT MAGICIAN, 1894 STROBRIDGE LITHO, MAGIC POSTER, HALFSHEET. POSTER WAS RECEIVED BACKED WITH CHARTEX, A HEAT ACTIVATED DRY BACKING CLOTH.
Restoration completed.
As the poster came in. Chartex still attached to verso.
Removing the chartex after curing for about 7 hours. Poster was completely skinned from the verso in order to cleanly and completely remove all chartex adhesive. Note that one area in the center did not cleanly de-laminate and was later removed by hand with a skivers' knife. We did have one small bit of damage result from this process.
Washing the poster after chartex has been removed, gelatin-hollytex facing still attached.
While being washed, chartex has been completely removed. Note the small hole in the center, the result of a slight mistake while skiving off the remains of the chartex adhesive.
Removing the protective hollytex.
Removing the remaining gelatin residue from the front.
Conservation processes complete.

Procedures

Poster was first treated with a facing whereby entire object (including the backing) was washed and mounted face down on museum board using a proprietary gelatin technique. The gelatin was allowed to partially cure in a cool environment for approx. 7 hours. The backing was then peeled away by hand, removing the canvas, chartex, and a thin layer of the poster paper in a controlled "skinning" technique. The poster was then rinsed, flattened, another gelatin facing was applied, and allowed to cure completely overnight. Poster and facing materials (a nonwoven polyester support) were then lifted off the board and trimmed; the poster was rinsed again and then mounted to linen on a substrate of Masa using a proprietary blend of water soluble adhesives. After curing overnight the protective facing was removed and any excess gelatin was removed with a damp lint-free pad.

Conclusion

POSTER WAS RESTORED USING PAPER PATCH AND COLORED PENCILS ONLY. COMPLETED ON 01/29/2010
