This innovative bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1850 to connect mainland Wales with the Isle of Anglesey across the Menai Strait.Historical Commentary: The text printed below the artwork provides a window into the history of the route. It notes that the Irish Mail service originally began on August 1st, 1848, from London Euston at 8:45 p.m.. Before the completion of the tubular bridge, passengers and mailbags had to disembark and take a horse-drawn coach via Thomas Telford's nearby suspension bridge to finish their rail journey. Artistic Significance: Norman Wilkinson, famously known as the inventor of "Dazzle Camouflage" during WWI, was commissioned by the LMS to paint scenes that promoted the speed, comfort, and destinations along British rail networks.
